Emergency Teaching Certification Made Easy:
A Step-by-Step Guide from Saint Joseph's University
What is an Emergency Certificate?
Emergency certification is a temporary strategy adopted by districts in Pennsylvania and several other states to address the shortages of certified teachers in PK-12 classrooms. This strategy allows candidates without an education degree, or those with certification in a different subject area, to fill teaching positions or serve as substitutes. PA will grant an emergency certificate or permit at the request of a school district. An emergency certificate is temporary and allows the candidate to fill a teaching vacancy for the duration of a school year. Please see the Pennsylvania Department of Education website for more information.
* Most school districts require an undergraduate degree for issuing an emergency certificate.
Reissuing an Emergency Certificate
The school district may allow re-issuance of the emergency certificate upon fulfillment of requirements such as enrolling in a teacher preparation program or taking continuing education credits in your teaching subject area/certification area.
Saint Joseph’s University offers continuing education credits approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Your school district will outline the number of credits you need for PDE to reissue an emergency certificate. Typically, emergency certificate holders are required to take 9 credits in a teacher preparation program within a stipulated time to be able to have your certificate reissued.
