Overview
The following fellowships REQUIRE students to be nominated by the Fellowships Office, and students are not able to submit an application by themselves. If you are interested in applying and you meet the criteria, please get in touch with the Fellowships office to discuss the application process. More information about each fellowship or scholarship can be found below.

Churchill Scholarships
Churchill Scholarships fund one year of graduate study in engineering, mathematics and the sciences at the University of Cambridge. 18 scholarships are awarded annually, and scholars are selected primarily on their academic and research achievements. During their time at Cambridge, Churchill Scholars participate in public engagement training and science policy seminars. SJU may nominate up to two candidates for this award.
Candidate Profile:
Academic excellence in a STEM field (the average GPA of recipients is 3.98), proven talent in research, and outstanding personal qualities.

Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarship Program
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program expands perspectives through academic and professional advancement and cross-cultural dialogue. Fulbright creates connections in a complex and changing world. In partnership with more than 140 countries worldwide, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers unparalleled opportunities in all academic and artistic disciplines to passionate and accomplished graduating college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals from all backgrounds. Program participants pursue graduate study, conduct research, or teach English abroad.
Candidate Profile:
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree prior to the start of their award. Key characteristics are a strong academic record, second language preparation, and the extent to which the candidate and the project will help to advance the Fulbright aim of promoting mutual understanding among nations through engagement in the host community, among other activities.

James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program
The James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is designed to provide a substantive work experience for students who have a serious career interest in the area of international affairs. Students who are selected will be hired to work as employees at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington, DC on a full-time basis for a period of one year. Candidates must be nominated by the SJU fellowships office.
Candidate Profile:
Applicants must have an outstanding academic record (the average GPA of recipients is 3.8) and relevant coursework; superior research and writing abilities; strong work, internship, and research experience (can be on-campus); and leadership potential.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
The Goldwater award provides scholarship support to undergraduate students majoring in the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics who intend to pursue research careers in these fields. The award provides support for tuition, room and board, books, and mandatory fees.
SJU may nominate up to 4 candidates for this award.
Candidate Profile:
Strong academic record (GPA. 3.8 or higher) and research experience.
Deadline:
- SJU internal deadline: December 1
- Award Deadline: Last Friday in January.
Marshall Scholarship
Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. As future leaders, with a lasting understanding of British society, Marshall Scholars strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments and their institutions. Marshall Scholars are talented, independent and wide-ranging, and their time as Scholars enhances their intellectual and personal growth. Their direct engagement with Britain through its best academic programs contributes to their ultimate personal success.
Candidate Profile:
In addition to a minimum GPA of 3.7, the review committee make emphasis on the following areas:
Academic Merit
- Quality of Program of study. Is the proposed program coherent and well thought through? Does the candidate’s writing give evidence of higher-order thinking skills and the ability to express thoughts clearly and without jargon?
- Knowledge of Proposed Courses and Supervisors. Has the candidate established the relevance of the proposed academic program to his or her scholarly and career plans and, in the case of a research proposal, provided evidence of substantive engagement with the proposed supervisor(s)? Is there a compelling academic rationale for doing the work at a British university with Marshall support?
- Evidence of Academic Background that is Strong and Relevant. Does the transcript show evidence of high academic achievement? Does this coursework prepare the candidate for the planned field of study? Is there other evidence of high-level performance (e.g. merit scholarships, academic prizes, research results, artistic creations, publications)?
- Quality and Breadth of Recommendations. Are the recommendations excellent and from people who know the candidate and can make informed comparisons with many other students? Do the recommendations, taken together, provide specific and well-documented details about leadership and ambassadorial potential as well as academic excellence?
Leadership Potential:
- Ability to Deliver Results. Can the candidate demonstrate how he or she delivered results from a position of leadership - whether by organizing, mobilizing or inspiring others. This may have been through his/her intellectual or artistic contributions or in other ways. Is there evidence that the candidate initiated something and carried it through to an outcome? Is the candidate likely to attain a position of influence in his/her field of expertise?
- Strength of Purpose. Has the applicant demonstrated courage of conviction, persistence, and determination in the pursuit of his or her goals? Do the candidate’s extra-curricular activities indicate commitment?
- Creativity. Is there evidence of creativity and innovation in the candidate’s approach to answering questions or solving problems?
- Self-awareness. Is there evidence of a strong desire to contribute to society? Is the candidate aware of his or her role in particular activities and impact on other people? Can the candidate explain what changed as a result of his or her involvement in something?
Ambassadorial Potential
- Knowledge of US/UK Relations. Is there evidence that the candidate understands the general US/UK relationship, as well as specific aspects of this relationship that are pertinent to his or her field of study? Is the candidate aware of opportunities for on-going relationships with UK counterparts?

George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program
The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program is a nationally competitive post-graduate award for U.S. citizens sponsored by the US-Ireland Alliance. The Mitchell Scholarship is designed to introduce and connect future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to public service. After their Mitchell year, scholars remain a part of our active alumni community.
Candidates must be nominated by the Fellowships Office.
Candidate Profile:
Candidates must have an outstanding academic record (average GPA of recipients is 3.9); show commitment to public service, and demonstrated leadership.

Rhodes Scholarships
The Rhodes Scholarships are international postgraduate awards for students to study at the University of Oxford. Rhodes Scholars are young leaders of outstanding intellect and character who are motivated to engage with global challenges, committed to the service of others, and show promise of becoming value-driven, principled leaders for the world’s future.
Candidate Profile:
Rhodes Selection Committees are looking for young people of outstanding intellect, character, leadership, and commitment to service. Academic excellence (the average GPA of recipients is 3.9); energy to use one's talents to the full; truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship; moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one's fellow beings.

Saint Andrew’s Fellowship
The Scholarship program of the St. Andrew’s Society of Philadelphia is designed to foster better understanding and relations between the United States and Scotland through the exchange of the best and brightest university students from our respective countries. Each year, the Society provides funds to send a small group of sophomore or rising junior American students to attend a full year at one of the “Four Ancients,” or the Scottish equivalent of the Ivy League: the Universities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and St. Andrew’s.
Candidate Profile:
The Society seeks applicants with a strong academic record in any field of study that are willing to spend a year abroad in Scotland. Requires nomination of the University and must be a U.S. citizen.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, the federal memorial to our thirty-third President, awards merit-based scholarships to college students who plan to pursue careers in government or elsewhere in public service. Truman Scholars receive up to $30,000 for graduate or professional school, participate in leadership development activities, and have special opportunities for internships and employment with the federal government.
Candidate Profile:
We are looking for students with a record of leadership and commitment to a career in public service. Competitive applicants also have a vision for change and future leadership in the field of their choice.

Udall Undergraduate Scholarship
The Udall Foundation awards scholarships to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or to the environment.
Candidate Profile:
Strong career interests related to the environment, tribal policy, or Native health care. Demonstrated leadership, service, and integrity.
