Erik Reynolds II became the all-time leading scorer in Saint Joseph's men's basketball history as the Hawks beat the Rhode Island Rams 91-74 on Wednesday night.
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
- Reynolds historic points came, appropriately enough, on a three, generated from an offensive rebound with 3:14 to go in the first half.
- With the bucket, he passed Jameer Nelson's mark of 2.094 points. Nelson held the record for 21 years after he surpassed Bernard Blunt.
- Reynolds ended the game with 2,114 career points.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Reynolds 22 points led the Hawks, as did his five assists.
- Rasheer Fleming scored 19 with seven rebounds and four steals
- Anthony Finkley netted a personal best 18. It is the first time in his career he scored in double figures in back-to-back games.
- Xzayvier Brown had 15 points, six rebounds and five dimes,
- Saint Joseph's has won 20 games in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2002-03 and 2003-04.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks got off to a slow start from the floor, hitting one of their first seven shots before recovering to go up 17-14 on a pair of Derek Simpson free throws at the 12:52 mark.
- URI responded with 12 in a row and maintained a modest lead for the next several minutes.
- In a first half full of runs, SJU scored 15 of the next 20 points to go up 34-33 before going into the break leading 38-36.
- St Joe's came out on fire in the second half, hitting seven of their first nine shots, including a trio of treys as the Hawks opened a 56-41 advantage in less than five minutes.
- Continuing the push, SJU expanded the lead to 16 by the midway mark of the stanza.
- From there, St. Joe's never led by less than 11 the remainder of the contest.
