The PGY2 Pharmacotherapy Residency program at PCP is designed to further refine skills attained during a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency. The goal of the residency program is to produce a practitioner with the ability to deliver pharmaceutical care to a diverse inpatient and outpatient patient population. Resident activities will include participation as a member of a multidisciplinary team in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings and the completion of a longitudinal research project. The resident will participate in didactic and experiential education of Doctor of Pharmacy students.
The competency areas, goals and objectives of the program are those of the ASHP-accredited PGY2 Pharmacotherapy Residency program.
Learning Sites
Cooper University Hospital
Most of the PGY2 resident learning experiences are offered at Cooper University Hospital (CUH) in Camden, NJ. CUH is a not-for-profit academic medical center offering more than 75 specialty services and licensed for over 600 beds. Cooper University Health Care serves as Southern New Jersey’s major tertiary-care referral hospital for specialized services and includes the following signature programs: Level I Southern New Jersey Regional Trauma Center, the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper, Adult Health Institute, Bone and Joint Institute, Digestive Health Institute, Cardiac Partners, Neurological Institute, Surgical Services Institute, Women’s and Children’s Institute, Urban Health Institute, Center for Critical Care Services, Center for Urgent and Emergent Services, Center for Population Health, and Center for Trauma Services. Children’s Regional Hospital, the only state-designated children’s hospital in South Jersey. Cooper offers more than 70 outpatient offices throughout the southern New Jersey region and is a core teaching hospital for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University.
Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at Saint Joseph’s University
Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (PCP) at Saint Joseph’s University is the oldest college of pharmacy in the United States. Since its origin in 1821, the College has continued to be a leader in pharmacy education. Besides the flagship program, the entry-level Doctor of Pharmacy degree and pharmacy-related baccalaureate programs are offered in the areas of pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacology and toxicology. PCP also offers graduate degrees in Pharmaceutics (MS, PhD) and Pharmacology and Toxicology (MS, PhD). The Erivan K. Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s also offers degrees in Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Marketing (BS), Health Administration (MS), Public Health (MPA) and Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Business (MBA).
Learning Experiences
An individualized schedule will be tailored to the needs and interests of the resident. Goals and objectives will be developed for each rotation. Learning experiences are completed at Cooper University Hospital or other affiliated institutions, including the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

- Ambulatory Care I and II (clinics include internal medicine, HIV, and ambulatory ICU)
- Primary preceptor for APPE student(s) during Adult Internal Medicine III

Residency Research and Publication
The PGY2 Pharmacotherapy Resident will be required to complete a pharmacotherapy-related research project using effective research and project management skills. The resident will be required to prepare a manuscript suitable for publication.
Teaching Responsibilities
The teaching responsibilities of the PGY2 resident are individualized and include precepting Doctor of Pharmacy students on introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experiences, small group facilitation and didactic lecture in Doctor of Pharmacy therapeutics or elective courses. These activities will involve approximately 400 total instructional hours per year. The PGY2 resident will also prepare and present one ACPE-accredited continuing education program.
The PGY2 resident is required to participate in a 12-month Teaching and Learning Curriculum Program/teaching certificate program (unless such a program has been completed as part of prior training).
Application Requirements and Process
The residency application process can be completed through PhORCAS. Application materials include a letter of intent, curriculum vitae, three recommendation forms, and official college transcripts. An interview will also be required. The residency program participates in the Match.
The applicant should have completed a PGY1 residency program by June 30 prior to starting the PGY2 residency. The applicant should be eligible for licensure in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
