International Programs (Study Abroad)
In May 2008 Saint Joseph’s University inaugurated its new China Program aimed at undergraduates interested in spending a month exploring China while earning credit for a regular Saint Joseph’s course taught by a Saint Joseph’s faculty member. In that first year of the China Program, thirteen undergraduates visited Shanghai, Nanjing, Tiantai, Ningbo, Xi’an and Beijing. Dr. David Carpenter, director of the Asian Studies Program and Associate Professor of the History of Religions in the Department Theology and Religious Studies, offered a course on Mahayana Buddhism and Dr. Ann Green, Associate Professor in the Department of English, offered a course on writing.
In the subsequent program years, courses have included “Modern China: Struggle and Survival,” taught by Dr. Jay Carter of the Department of History and “International Management,” taught by Dr. John Neiva of the Department of Management.
The China Summer Program will continue to offer a variety of course selections and take students to some of the most famous, historical and beautiful cities in China.
