Advocating for the Deaf
Kathryn Goulding, MS ’22, who was born deaf and received a cochlear implant at the age of two, was inspired by her speech and hearing teachers to become a teacher of the deaf. Now, she is committed to extending similar invaluable support to children with hearing loss.
Goulding graduated from Saint Joseph’s with a master of science in special education and a concentration in deaf and hard of hearing education PK-12. During the week, she is a teacher of the deaf at Eastern Suffolk Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES).
“Students who are deaf and hard of hearing face many different challenges. They not only learn differently, they need to acquire different life skills from their typically hearing peers. My aim is to empower students to advocate for themselves in regard to their hearing loss,” Goulding explains.

In her teaching role, she provides pre-teaching of lessons on new concepts and vocabulary, collaborates with fellow educators to ensure necessary support for students who are deaf or hard of hearing and empowers students to communicate effectively in both academic and social settings.
Alongside her academic pursuits, Goulding launched AJ Sunflower Boutique while in college. In addition to providing fashionable clothing, her store also serves as a catalyst for community engagement. Through fundraisers benefiting schools and local organizations and clothing donations to community groups, she fosters a culture of giving back. AJ Sunflower Boutique hosts workshops in American Sign Language and do-it-yourself classes, actively involving and promoting other local businesses.
“I aspire to be a relentless advocate for my students, showcasing despite any disability, achieving one's dreams is entirely within reach,” Goulding asserts. “It’s crucial that my students realize their potential and leave their mark on the world.”
