An Aspiring Surgeon, Serving Her Country
Irena Kondrat, BA ’22, is currently on active duty in Fort Drum, New York, as an Infantry Officer in the U.S. Army.
She completed the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (AROTC) program at Saint Joseph’s and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, later serving as Second Lieutenant Enrollment Officer at Temple University’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.
Kondrat graduated with a major in economics and a post-baccalaureate pre-health certificate, as well as minors in faith justice studies, health care ethics and international relations.
Kondrat, who is of Ukrainian descent and is fluent in Ukrainian, served as a translator under the Cochran Fellowship Program and has been active in efforts to support Ukraine amid the Russian invasion. She was also heavily involved in serving others through Saint Joseph’s pre-med track, which brought her to Central America to help in various clinics.

Upon her return, she applied her experiences toward her position as a fellow at the Institute of Clinical Bioethics (ICB). During her time as a fellow, also volunteered at various Hispanic Health Promoter Clinics, was a student volunteer at Keystone Hospice Philadelphia and received the Allen and Dolores Gustafson Distinguished Research Grant in 2022 for her work as a co-author of “Human Facial Transplantation: 15-Year Update.”
Looking ahead, Kondrat plans to attend medical school and complete a residency in trauma surgery after serving several years commanding troops.
