Shining a Light in Quantum Optoelectronics
Elise Brutschea, BS ’19, is producing groundbreaking research, putting women at the forefront of the STEM industry and focusing on being a role model for young women.
Brutschea graduated from Saint Joseph’s College of Arts and Sciences with a chemistry major and was a recipient of the John P. McNulty Program for Leadership in Science and Mathematics Scholarship.
Today, Brutschea is a PhD student at Harvard University, researching quantum optoelectronics of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides.
“I would say that Dr. Mark Forman had the largest impact on me. I wouldn’t be here without him,” says Brutschea. “I conducted independent research in Dr. Forman's lab for three years with his thoughtful guidance and intellectual support. It was where I learned what it means to be a research scientist.”

The countless research opportunities Brutschea was exposed to during her time in the chemistry and McNulty Scholars programs at Saint Joseph’s pushed her to pursue a graduate program, providing her with a variety of diverse and unique research areas that supported her field of interest ahead of her PhD.
