Blake Tobias Jr.
Class of 2019Senior Regional Practice Manager of Penn Transplant Institute
A Leader in Healthcare and Academia
Blake Tobias Jr., MHA ’19, MHCI, currently serves as the senior regional practice manager of the Penn Transplant Institute, the transplant service line for the University of Pennsylvania Health System.
But immediately following his 2019 graduation from Saint Joseph’s, Tobias was named the COVID-19 incident commander at Reading Hospital - Tower Health. Originally on the marketing and development teams there, Tobias enrolled in SJU’s master’s in health administration (MHA) program, with a concentration in organizational development and leadership in an effort to further his position in healthcare administration.
“I cannot express enough how much of my ‘trial-by-the-COVID-fire’ was mitigated by the lessons I received from St. Joe’s MHA program,” recalls Tobias. “I was able to use the real-life applicability that every course exposed me to in order to actively help hundreds of thousands of members of the community.”
SJU’s MHA program provided Tobias with the knowledge and skills needed to enact real-world, real-time change in the workplace while he was still taking classes. It was this level of dedication and innovation that led the executive team to entrust Tobias with directing the hospital’s incident response to COVID-19.
Today, Tobias is responsible for the business operations of a dozen clinic locations across Pennsylvania and New Jersey serving patients in hepatology and nephrology units.
He now sits on multiple boards and organizations within the healthcare industry to expand on his quest for more affordable, high-quality care. He also shares his industry knowledge with others through his co-authored textbook, “Healthcare Ethics and the Law,” and continues to find more avenues to push the world around him toward the future he envisions.
I feel like the mentality of SJU has exposed me to a world that I am absolutely in love with,

“I feel like the mentality of SJU has exposed me to a world that I am absolutely in love with,” says Tobias. “And I didn’t know if I'd ever want to leave the academic world.”
“My goal in life was to help people and to give back to my community,” Tobias says. “Working in healthcare is one of the most rewarding experiences I could have ever imagined.”
