Interfraternity Council Recruitment
IFC fraternities recruit at the beginning of each semester, and each fraternity hosts its own events for interested men. IFC promotes recruitment by distributing a calendar of all events, as well as providing ways for interested students to learn more about fraternity membership. In order to accept a bid from any single organization on campus, men are required to visit each of our three fraternities. IFC holds an orientation at the beginning of each Recruitment Period to explain the formal process, as well as informal events held throughout the semester outside of Formal Recruitment that help men to get to know the brothers.
Interfraternity Council rush is the process where men who are interested in joining one of our 4 social fraternities can explore their options. Rush takes place both in the fall and spring semesters. All events are informal, with interested new members attending events in which they are interested.
If you are interested in going through the Formal Recruitment Process please fill out this online Recruitment Registration. The Office of Student Leadership & Activities will forward the information of all interested men to each fraternity participating in recruitment. IFC Recruitment will be happening in late August / September.
Requirements for Membership
- 12 completed college credits
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7
Panhellenic Council Recruitment
Panhellenic sororities participate in a joint recruitment process held at the start of each spring semester. The process consists of three rounds of events that allow potential new members the opportunity to learn more about each of the chapters at SJU. During this process, potential new members ask key questions about each group and gain a deeper understanding of what membership in a sorority means. The process begins with an orientation and registration period. At the end of the fall semester, there is a Meet the Sororities event where more information is given about the process. Throughout the process Recruitment Counselors or Nu Chis, guide potential new members. Nu Chis are experienced sorority leaders that help answer questions and act as mentors during the recruitment process.
Panhellenic recruitment is the process where women who are interested in joining one of our 5 social sororities on campus explore their options. There are two types of recruitment: formal and continuous open bidding (COB). Formal recruitment takes place in January and February. COB occurs after the conclusion of formal recruitment and takes place year-round. Both options are a great way of learning about the organizations, however, the majority of women at SJU go through formal recruitment.
If you are interested in going through the Primary Recruitment Process, please fill out this online Recruitment Registration Form. The Office of Student Leadership & Activities will forward the information of all interested women to each sorority participating in recruitment. Any potential sorority recruitment will be happening in early September.

- 12 completed college credits
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7
- Must not have initiated into an NPC sorority or have pledged an NPC sorority since the prior recruitment period
Continuous Open Bidding (COB)
Chapters are permitted to recruit up to a designated number indicated by average chapter size. Chapters with available membership spots can take members continually throughout the year until they fill these spots. To fill open membership spots, chapters can extend bids in a variety of ways, whether that means hosting a COB event or just communicating directly with a potential new member. While registering for COB is not required, the Office of Student Leadership & Activities is happy to provide the contact information of any interested women to chapters that have available membership spots. To be eligible to join a chapter through COB, students must meet the same criteria listed above.
Sorority Primary Recruitment
Formal Sorority Recruitment is an opportunity for all second-semester first-year, upperclassmen and transfer students to explore membership in the Panhellenic Council sororities. Over the course of 5 days, potential new members (PNMs) will visit with each chapter. At the end of each day, the PNMs make selections to narrow their options while the chapters do the same. This process is known as mutual selection and uses a computer system to generate matches and schedules. Each morning, PNMs receive their schedule for the day from the Recruitment Counselors. The Recruitment Counselors serve as mentors throughout the process, remaining disassociated from their chapters throughout the Fall semester and formal recruitment to provide unbiased advice and support. More information can be found on the Panhellenic Council website.
National Pan-Hellenic Council/City-Wide Intake
NPHC member organizations engage in membership intake at various times throughout the academic year to recruit and select new members. Each organization coordinates the timing and frequency of this process at their discretion. Greek Life in collaboration with Black Student Union (BSU) sponsors Meet the Greeks annually so that interested students can learn more about culturally-based fraternities and sororities. Each of our chapters are City-Wide affiliated chapters, meaning that they are home to students on multiple campuses through the Greater Philadelphia Area.
SJU students who are interested in joining Greek organizations affiliated with the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc (NPHC) may do so by joining a City-Wide chapter. Saint Joseph's University students are able to join Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta, Inc.. SJU students must have completed 12 credits and have a cumulative GPA of 2.7 to be eligible. For more information about the individual groups, please visit the NPHC City-Wide Chapters page.
