Information for Parents
Welcome to the Saint Joseph's University Greek Life community! Your student might be thinking about joining an organization much bigger than themselves. A fraternity or a sorority is a "home away from home" for college students. It is about community. It is about friendship, brotherhood or sisterhood. It is about values, leadership and a lifelong bond. Your student might have moments in their college career where they question if they made the right choice. Did they choose the right school, did they choose the right major, should they have interviewed for that internship? Their sisters and brothers are there to help them through those moments. They will have fun together, raise money together, give back to the community together and celebrate lives and victories together. They will form bonds with the Greek Life community that only those who are Greek understand. Support them. Encourage them. Have open communication about their Greek Life experience with them.
Nearly 1,200 students at SJU are members of the Greek Life community, which is approximately 22%! Academics are important to the Greek Life community here, and the All Greek GPA is 3.16, compared to the All Undergraduate GPA of 3.10. For our fraternity members, the All Fraternity GPA is 3.07 compared to the All Male GPA of 2.98. For our sorority members, the All Sorority GPA is 3.24 compared to the All Female GPA of 3.20.
Philanthropy is an important part of Greek Life. Our fraternities and sororities host great events each year to raise money for many good causes. Whether it is Alpha Phi's Red Dress Gala or Alpha Omicron Pi's Strike Out Arthritis Kickball tournament, a lot of wonderful stuff happens at Saint Joseph's.
If your son or daughter is interested in joining a fraternity or sorority, encourage them to make their decision based on values and the potential relationships they will have, rather than campus perception or potential social opportunities. Being Greek is a lifelong commitment and should not be taken lightly.
