Office of Community Standards Mission Statement
The Office of Community Standards supports the University’s Catholic and Jesuit mission through the education and administration of policies and expectations designed to promote a safe, respectful, inclusive, and welcoming environment, in which all students can learn, grow and become moral leaders in their communities. The Office of Community Standards encourages all students to reflect on what it means to be a Hawk, on and off-campus, and understand the impact and harm their individual decisions and actions can have on others. As an entity within the Office of Community Standards, Off-Campus Student Life is dedicated to providing a positive quality of life in the community for off-campus students and community members, through support, outreach and accountability.
Our Role on Campus
- Sustain an inclusive and respectful community
- Encourage high expectations of HAWKS
- Hold students accountable for violations
- Help students make better decisions
- Protect the overall community
- Embrace our Jesuit values

Complaints can be reported to the University in a variety of ways. Please see Reporting an Incident for more information.
How You Can Help
- Educate yourself (and your student) on the University’s policies and procedures… before something happens. This website and the Student Handbook are both great resources.
- Partner with the University and support our expectations for HAWKS on and off-campus.
- Understand the limits of your involvement – legally and philosophically.
- Encourage your student’s autonomy, independence, and accountability.
- Talk to your student… ask them questions.
- Finally, encourage your student to regularly check their SJU email and set up their voicemail (if they use a cellphone).
