Before the Fair: Steps & Tips
Handshake's Guide to Attending a Virtual Fair has everything you need to know about registering, preparing for, and participating in a virtual career fair. The Career Center STRONGLY encourages you to review this article and keep the below steps and tips in mind when preparing for and participating in the Spring 2024 Virtual Career Fair.
-
We recommend that you complete this step during the week of February 5th or earlier.
- In order to ensure employers have access to your resume, you will need to make your document visible and set your profile privacy to "Community".
- Once your resume is uploaded, you can build your profile from your resume. To ensure you qualify for employer sessions, make sure you have filled out the following fields on your profile:
-
We recommend that you complete this step during the week of February 12th or earlier.
- You won't have to worry about waiting in lines at the Career Fair this semester! In the virtual format, all students MUST PRE-SCHEDULE 1:1 or GROUP SESSIONS with employers ahead of the fair. Some employer schedules will fill up quickly, so sign up for and manage virtual fair sessions with employers as soon as possible.
- Please note that some 1:1 sessions have employer implemented restrictions based on GPA, school year, major, and/or work authorization status. If you are unable to schedule a session, please note that these restrictions could be in place and we recommend that you sign up for a group session (no restrictions) instead.
-
You may continue to sign up for sessions until 11:55pm on February 20th.
New employers will be registering for the fair daily. Therefore, the Career Center suggests checking Handshake frequently for open sessions with new employers leading up to the fair. Additionally, if you were unable to sign up for a 1:1 session with an employer because all of the time slots were filled, continue to check back as other students may release their time slots if they no longer wish to meet with an employer.
-
Please make any cancellations by Monday, February 19th so other students have a chance to sign up before the fair.
-
Tip 1: Test and prepare technology ahead of the event
Review attendee requirements for integrated video on Handshake. We also recommend downloading the Google Chrome browser and using this during the event.
Tip 2: Prepare your physical space ahead of the event.
It is important to know where you will be conducting your 1:1 meetings with employers on the day of the Virtual Career Fair. A quiet space with a neutral background is an ideal environment for a 1:1 session. Follow these six steps to prepare your space ahead of time.
If you are looking to reserve a space for all or part of the event, please reach out to the Career Center at careerhelp@sju.edu to reserve an interview room.
Tip 3: Remember that even though you won't be meeting with employers in person at the Career Fair, it is still important to:
- Dress professionally from head to toe
- Arrive to all sessions on time
- Maintain eye contact and practice active listening
- Ask questions
