4th Annual High School Analytics & Data Visualization Competition Spring 2025

The Department of Decision and System Sciences is proud to host this multiple round, team competition, culminating in a one-day on-campus event on March 12, 2025 at the Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph's University. The competition invites teams from local area high schools to expand their working knowledge and understanding of analytics by exploring a data set, creating visualizations from that data, and presenting their findings to judges who are academics and industry leaders in Business Intelligence & Analytics.

No specific coursework or skill set is required. This competition is really about problem-solving, finding patterns that may not be obvious, and being able to tell a story about data while simultaneously developing critical thinking, presentation, leadership, and other transferable skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We are asking each team to provide one Tableau file that contains at least one dashboard (collection of multiple visuals that work together to tell a story). You can create as many dashboards as you would like; however, you will need to keep the presentation time limit in mind as all dashboards need to be presented in the allotted presentation time.

  • This year, we are asking that teams procure their own Tableau Licenses from Tableau. For those who do not know, Tableau has an Academic Program that offers free Tableau licenses to all active students and teachers - regardless of grade. Please see below for the respective links.

    Students: Tableau for Students

    Teachers: Tableau for Teaching

  • No, your team does not need to be in the same place. You can present however you deem to work best for your team. HOWEVER, all participants' cameras need to be turned on and the dashboard needs to be clearly visible to judges. Our suggestion would be for someone to be sharing their screen and in charge of demonstrating if you decide to make that a part of your presentation.

  • Schools with Uniforms - you have the option of wearing your school uniform or dressing business professional.

Schools without Uniforms - business professional dress.

  • You will be allowed to finish your presentation as we aim to encourage learning and growth. HOWEVER, your score will reflect that you went over time so that we are able to keep the competition fair to everyone.

  • When in doubt or if you are unsure of the solution, please feel free to seek assistance. There are multiple resources available to you to get help and feedback.

    1. Makeover Monday Lab - this is a virtual lab that is run by SJU to assist students in learning data visualization. As a competition participant, you will have access to this lab
    2. Professional Mentors - all teams have access to a pool of mentors that will be available to meet upon request.
    3. Tableau’s Online Community - Tableau has built an excellent structure online where people are able to ask questions and help each other. Chances are that if you have the question, many people have before you. Start a google search with your question and the word “Tableau”
