Here, you'll find resources that will help you get started with networking and building those connections.
-
Even though you may not realize it, you already have a professional network! Start within your comfort zone and the people you know to ask questions and gain insight. As your connections and confidence grow, your network will start expanding.
Before attending a networking event or career fair, make sure you have perfected your 30-second pitch. This will help you stand out when approaching potential employers.

Whether you’re looking to move into a new role within your current employer or branching into an entirely new industry, networking should be a focal point of your job search activity. Making professional connections and developing meaningful relationships help you gather information, expand your knowledge of job opportunities, careers and industries and builds your resource bank. The Career Development Center will support you in identifying, contacting and ultimately building and maintaining professional relationships with individuals and groups of interest.
-
Start with the network you’ve already established and bring them up to speed on your career plan. This can be a short message to a connection on LinkedIn or an invitation to someone who works in your organization to meet for coffee. Before outreach, make sure you have crafted a focused goal to communicate (i.e. “I’m exploring careers in X industry and hoped to learn about your experience in the field” or “I’m in graduate school to combine my past experience with new data analytics skills and want to learn more about your role”.) This will signal to your potential network that you take their time seriously and you’re focused.

Professional Associations exist for almost every career path and are a great resource for building and expanding your network.
