Department of Political Science
The political science department at Saint Joseph's University is firmly rooted in the liberal arts tradition of Jesuit education, and our curriculum offers students the opportunity to examine both the empirical and theoretical implications of politics, government and the political process. The program fosters a broad definition of “politics” and encourages students to think about how politics is applicable to everything from elections to globalization to poverty and even popular culture.
From the timeless classics of political thought to the current issues affecting regional, national, and world politics, our students develop an understanding of the increasing interconnectedness between domestic affairs and international trends. Our dedicated faculty guides students through a critical examination of the significant questions we face at the local, national and global levels.
Our department emphasizes the importance of connecting the classroom to the wider issues in global, national and local politics by organizing many events, trips, study tours and internships throughout the year. By encouraging students to develop a life-long love of learning, a sense of responsible citizenship, the habit of critical analysis and the ability to effectively express one’s self through speaking and writing, the political science program offers a solid foundation for graduate and legal studies, as well as careers in business, law, education, journalism, social services, communications, diplomacy and politics.

I’ve been taught through a Jesuit lens for eight years, and I’ve learned how important it is to give back. I plan to be an ally for those from marginalized communities of color who seek help from a judicial system that doesn’t always have their best interests in mind. I feel that with the connections I’ve made through Saint Joseph's pre-law program, and those I will make at Villanova, that there will be a place for me in Philadelphia."

At Saint Joseph's University, and as an international relations major, we talk a lot about the root of injustices around the world and how to combat those injustices. This background helped me when I was an intern at Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA). I have given new ideas for agencies to develop into programs and have been able to work with the social policy group about how to attack injustices that affect our agencies and their clients."
