Management Internships & Co-Ops

Internships

Students who meet specific academic standards are invited to apply for internships. Internships may be for academic credit or not, paid or unpaid. Here, you can find more information about how to apply for internships, as well as guidelines and forms. If you have any questions about internships, please contact the department chair.

    • 3.0 GPA
    • Minimum first-semester junior standing (completion of 60 credit hours)
    • Completed MGT 110, MGT 120 or MGT 121
    • Approval prior to starting their internship 

  • 1. The semester preceding the initiation of the internship, students must obtain the following forms:

     

    2. Students must work with the Career Center to find and verify that the internship opportunity exists and outlines the duties and expectations of the internship site for the student. For new internship sites, students must work with the CDC to "register" the organization offering the internship. 

    When evaluating a potential internship, look to see if there are adequate opportunities for student learning, opportunities for the intern to be part of a "real" project and if the internship sponsor provides an experience that is of value to the student. We also encourage meeting with the CDC for a resume check and mock interview. 

    3. Meet with your advisor to review your program of study and academic performance to determine if an internship is a viable option. If the advisor concludes that an internship is appropriate, they will provide support for the internship in the form of an email which you will include in your electronic application.

    4. It is your responsibility to identify a faculty member in the management department who is willing to serve as an internship mentor. You will work with that faculty member in developing a syllabus for the course and get mentored by them. Have the faculty mentor provide support for the internship in the form of an email which you will include in your electronic application.*

    *NOTE: If sufficient students are accepted for an internship program in any given semester —  typically 8-12 students — a course will be offered and a faculty member from our department will be assigned to teach it during that semester. The registrar's office will oversee the registration process. You will be notified if a course is offered.

    5. Submit electronic application form; this form will then be reviewed by the Management Department chair.

    6. If the application is approved by the chair, the student obtains approval from Todd Krug, Ph.D., director of the Cooperative Education Program for the Haub School of Business.

    7. The registrar's office reviews, and if they approve, sets up a course and registers you.

Independent Study

In special circumstances, a student may substitute an existing course that they are unable in a regularly scheduled manner due to conflict. If that is the case, students may take an independent study. Please fill out this electronic form to request approval for an independent study course. 

Practicum

This course is meant for students who are working over the course of. the semester/summer for an employer that requires credit as a condition of employment. This course does not satisfy any major, minor, general education or elective requirement. Grades are pass/fail, and the course may only be repeated once. 

Student Qualifications

Students must have a major under the management department or obtained approval from the department chair and have completed MGT 110, MGT 120, MGT 121 or an equivalent course. 

How to Apply

To apply for a practicum, students must:

  • Submit a letter to the department chair explaining why the practical training is required
  • Obtain a letter from their employer and submit it 

Practicum Expectations

Students must submit an 8-10 page paper to the department chair at the end of their practical training. The paper must describe their work responsibilities and what skills and lessons they acquired by participating.

 

Co-Op Program

Operated within the Erivan K.
