Pre Optometry Society

The pre-optometry society at USciences is a place for students on the pre-optometry track to connect, study, and network. Organization President Sejal Mathur ’23 (BMS) shared more about the organization.

Describe Pre-Optometry Society- what is the purpose or mission?
Our mission is to promote the profession of optometry as a career option for University of the Sciences students, and to provide resources to those applying for optometry school while offering volunteer opportunities for community outreach events concerning ocular health.

Since each health profession varies greatly in terms of the application process for their respective graduate schools (including the preparation required), we formed this org to help our student body succeed!

Why should people join?
People should join this very fun org because it might spark an interest in what field you want to pursue, or strengthen your existing passion for optometry. This community of members are helpful, caring, and are focused on spreading awareness of the optometric profession and related career paths to develop leaders!

We would love to provide future members with optometry-related resources and assistance on their path towards optometry school, studies, etc., and serve local communities regarding ocular health through volunteer work!

Why did you join Pre-Optometry Society?
This Pre-Health Professions organization for Optometry was just recently created, and I have already learned a lot! I am glad to know and have connections to other students in this org that can share advice and be a great friend and guide in the process.

I joined this org because it has brought together students from different paths on the same journey to explore their interests in the field of optometry (whether it be optometry school, medical school, etc.). I loved how this is a flexible club where everyone’s idea is heard and incorporated into future events so it is more beneficial to our members!

What are Pre-Optometry Society members like?
The USciences Pre-Optometry Society hopes to spark interest in those who have not yet considered the field or have not been informed about eye health. We encourage people considering multiple career paths, as well as those who just want to volunteer and help out the community, to participate in our events! Anyone is welcome to join!

What kind of events do you participate in throughout the year?
So far we have been doing virtual events but that has not held us back from meeting, collaborating, and learning about this field! We have presentations from optometry schools and other speakers.

My favorite event has been sending letters to our pen-pals who are visually-impaired students at Overbrook Educational Center (K-8) who have been affected by COVID-19. This had a great response, and we were in touch again to send Valentine’s Day Letters.
