SJU Senior Earns Second Place in Global Investment Competition
Senior finance and economics major Patrick Michael, of Dennis Township, New Jersey, earned second place among hundreds of participants in the 2017 ETF Global Portfolio Challenge.
PHILADELPHIA (January 18, 2018) — Senior finance and economics major Patrick Michael, of Dennis Township, New Jersey, earned second place among hundreds of participants in the 2017 ETF Global Portfolio Challenge. The annual competition invites students from around the world to construct a portfolio through an online simulation.
“The exchange-traded funds (ETF) industry has experienced rapid growth in recent years as it provides attractive levels of diversification and simplicity,” says Michael, who also serves as president of SJU’s Finance Society and founded the Haub Socially Responsible Investment Fund. “I was extremely excited about the opportunity to see how I fared against my global peers.”
“Patrick’s financial acumen demonstrates the ingenuity that sets SJU students apart from their peers,” says Dean Joseph A. DiAngelo Jr., Ed.D. ’70.
Student investors select between four and 10 ETFs using a theoretical endorsement of $100,000 to complete the challenge and are assessed on their investments’ performance. Michael’s portfolio earned a 21.64 percent return on investment.
“This competition has taught me how to create and maintain a multi-monthlong investment strategy,” says Michael. “In this competition, I maintained my initial portfolio — which was long on big tech, financials and semiconductors — and learned to develop a longer time horizon in my strategies.”
Michael will join the contest's top 25 overall finishers at the 2018 Spring ETP Forum in New York City on Tuesday, April 24, where he will have the opportunity to network with over 500 financial professionals and partake in the nation's second-largest forum of its kind.
