SJU Hosts Vice President of Panama Isabel Saint Malo de Alvarado

PHILADELPHIA (April 4, 2017) — Saint Joseph’s University will welcome Vice President of the Republic of Panama Isabel Saint Malo de Alvarado, a 1989 graduate of Saint Joseph’s, to campus on Monday, April 10.

Saint Malo is the first woman in Panama’s history to be elected vice president. After graduating with an international relations major from SJU, she embarked on a career of public service and consensus building. She worked as a business consultant and held a variety of embassy positions, serving as an alternate ambassador from Panama to the United Nations in New York. Saint Malo also worked with the United Nations Development Program as country manager for Panama for 15 years.

As vice president of the Republic, Saint Malo supports the National Council for Development (Concertación Nacional para el Desarrollo), where she seeks to articulate and lead the development of policies aimed at eradicating poverty and social inequality through the adoption of the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. In September 2015, Panama was among the 193 world leaders who agreed to the Global Goals, an outline of actions proposed to eradicate extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030.

During her visit to Saint Joseph’s, Saint Malo will meet with administrators and faculty across campus, including University President Mark C. Reed, Ed.D., before delivering an address titled “Panama: A Critical UN Partner for Sustainable Development Goals.” The lecture, sponsored by the Haub School of Business and the SJU chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the business honors society, will be held in the Wolfington Teletorium of Mandeville Hall, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.
