Post Crossing Officially Opens
The major infrastructure project named after distinguished SJU alumnus John R. Post ‘60 was opened to the public on Thursday, Sept. 26.
On Thursday, Sept. 26, Saint Joseph’s University opened a major capital infrastructure project for the second time in as many months. This time, it was Post Crossing, a pedestrian underpass built beneath City Avenue, getting the spotlight.
Post Crossing is named after distinguished SJU alumnus John R. Post ‘60. It was Post’s major naming gift – in conjunction with grants from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation – that made Thursday’s opening possible.
Post visited Hawk Hill for the occasion and was joined by Saint Joseph’s University President Cheryl A. McConnell, PhD.
“As we continue to transform our campus,” said McConnell, “we do so always with the intention of bettering the experience of our students, while also adding value for our community.”
The newly opened thoroughfare will provide pedestrians, cyclists and other forms of active mobility with a safe and efficient path for crossing City Avenue. The University expects more than 1,500 students, faculty, staff and community members to use Post Crossing every day.
“I graduated from St. Joe’s in 1960 and received an education that has been the foundation for my success,” recalled Post. “It only makes sense to give back to the place that has meant so much to me. It is so gratifying to see the positive impact Post Crossing will have on SJU students because, in the end, it’s all about them.”
Post has an extensive history of giving back to his alma mater. Post Crossing joins two other significant buildings on campus – the John R. Post ’60 Academic Center and Post Hall – which are named in his honor for his generous contributions to the University.

Post has also donated several iconic metal sculptures, which grace the campus grounds.
In addition to naming the pedestrian underpass, Post’s gift is a significant contribution toward Saint Joseph’s SOAR comprehensive campaign goal of $300 million. As of September 2024, the University has raised nearly $200 million, which will fund the modernization and development of campus facilities, bolster the University’s commitment to financial aid and further academic excellence through investments in new and existing academic programs.
