Andrea Hersh, RDN, LDNAs a registered dietician, Andrea Hersh, RDN, LDN, is dedicated to helping people make healthy food choices so they can feel their best. Hersh works with Sodexo, USciences’ dining provider, to best meet the needs of students by ensuring that there are healthy eating options available across campus for all students regardless of dietary needs.

What is your goal as USciences’ Campus Dietician?
As a campus dietician at USciences, my overarching goal is to ensure that there are healthy choices available on campus for ALL students, including those on special diets. One piece of my job is working with students, connecting to student groups, and hosting wellness events on campus. This includes nutrition consultations, presentations to athletes, taste tests, nutrition lessons and more! Another piece of my role involves working as part of the management team at Sodexo dining services. I connect with Chef Joe and the rest of the staff to create healthy meal opportunities, conduct food allergy trainings, and incorporate student feedback to improve dining experiences

What kind of things do you help students with?
The opportunities are endless! I’m willing to try anything students ask for that is related to nutrition in some way, shape, or form. Currently, I spend a lot of my time meeting with students for 1-on-1 consultations. I can provide individualized nutrition therapy for most nutritional concerns, and I have resources for students who come to me with a topic I am not familiar with. Some common areas of counseling include healthy eating, athletic performance, vegetarian/vegan diets, food allergies and intolerances, and weight loss/gain. Other than consults, I frequently meet with student organizations to host nutrition presentations, cooking classes, and other events.

What can a student expect from meeting with you?
I’m passionate about nutrition because I truly believe that good health is the foundation of happiness. When working with students, I can provide a safe space to discuss wellness goals and/or concerns. I always encourage students to strive for progress, not perfection. When we develop a wellness plan, I prefer to take a more client-focused approach where the student will choose where they wish to start.

What do you like most about being a dietician?
This is easy- My favorite piece of my job is connecting with my clients. I enjoy knowing that although many people may have the same goal in mind, each person has a different way of achieving that goal. And I'm so happy to play a part in that!

Why is it important for students to be mindful of their diet?
As college students, you all require so much energy and brain power to make it through your day! Having a balanced diet plays a big piece in your academic performance. It’s all a balancing act, but ensuring that you’re consuming enough energy each day from nutrient-rich foods will surely set you up for success! Additionally, it’s really helpful to develop mindful habits especially while at college, because those habits are likely to stick with you later in life.

What is your #1 tip for students looking to be healthier?
Before you begin your journey to wellness, ask yourself what healthy means to you. Everyone's version of healthy is different, and therefore no two journeys are the same!
