The Institute of Clinical Bioethics at Saint Joseph’s University recently announced a partnership to become the exclusive ethicists for Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health. The Institute serves as the regionally recognized hospital’s bioethics consultant and is responsible for the ethics education of more than 130 medical interns, residents and fellows in internal medicine, family practice, surgery and OB/GYN. Education will consist of formal ethics lectures and teaching rounds.

“We are honored to expand our relationship across Jefferson Health,” says Peter Clark, S.J., Ph.D., director of the Institute of Clinical Bioethics at Saint Joseph’s. “We are excited about working together with Abington Hospital to guide them through ethical considerations, provide the best possible care to their diverse patient population, and to train the clinical leaders of tomorrow.”

In 2016, the Institute formed a partnership with Jefferson Health – Northeast, and serves as the bioethics consultant for the three hospital campuses: Torresdale, Bucks and Frankford.

The Institute for Clinical Bioethics serves as the ethics consultant for 15 hospitals and five nursing home and social services facilities, both in the region and internationally. The Institute offers formal lectures and classes, continuing medical education ethics programs, institutional ethics committees, institutional review boards and 24/7 consults on clinical cases that are ethically complex.

Abington Hospital, a regional referral center and teaching hospital, has been providing comprehensive, high-quality services for people in Montgomery, Bucks and Philadelphia counties for more than 100 years.

“As a learning organization, we are very excited about this new collaboration with the Institute of Clinical Bioethics. We look forward to the intellectual discourse and educational opportunities which will result from this partnership,” says David Gary Smith, MD, director of Graduate Medical Education at Abington Hospital.
