DiJulia to Be Honored with Shield of Loyola, Named Scholarship

Don DiJulia ’67, longtime athletics director at SJU and now special assistant to University President Mark C. Reed, Ed.D., will be honored with the Shield of Loyola at this year’s Leadership Awards Dinner, to be held Thursday, October 25 at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown.

In addition to recognizing Don with this distinguished award, the University has designated a scholarship — the Dominick J. DiJulia '67 Scholarship — in his name. Proceeds from the Leadership Awards Dinner will provide the initial funding for this scholarship.

The Shield of Loyola is given annually to an alumnus or alumna who has had remarkable success in his or her profession, whose life reflects the values of St. Ignatius Loyola, and who has demonstrated unparalleled loyalty to Saint Joseph’s University.

“While those who are closest to Don are most keenly aware of his qualifications in these areas, you don’t have to know him to see how deserving he is of this estimable honor,” says Joseph P. Kender, vice president for university relations. “He has overseen much of the athletic program’s development in the last 30 years, including the creation of five varsity programs and the expansion and renovation of Michael J. Hagan ’85 Arena. He selflessly gives of his time to support his beloved Hawks, appearing at more games and athletics functions than it seems possible for a single person. And Don is among the most respected voices in collegiate athletics, having earned a place in the SJU Athletics, Big 5 and Eastern College Athletics Conference Halls of Fame.”

The University will present three additional awards at the dinner.

Jim Norris ’85, managing director at Vanguard International and a member of the SJU Board of Trustees, will receive the Alumni Professional Achievement Award, which acknowledges those alumni whose professional accomplishments have brought distinction to themselves, credit to Saint Joseph’s and benefit to their communities.

Trustee Eileen Cardile ’87, senior consultant for Numerof & Associates, will receive the Reverend Joseph S. Hogan, S.J. Award, which is presented to an individual who exemplifies the biblical principles of faith, hope and love and outstanding loyal service to Saint Joseph’s.

Glenn Todaro ’07, senior manager for corporate accounting at BrightView Landscapes, will be recognized with the Ignatius Award, which honors a graduate from within the past 20 years who has devoted efforts in the service and promotion of Saint Joseph’s University and/or has lived a life of “service to others” consistent with the principles of Saint Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order.
