Nearly 2,200 students received their undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees today during Saint Joseph’s University’s 167th commencement exercises.
Jameer Nelson, a 14-year NBA veteran and the all-time leading scorer in Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball history, was among the graduates this morning, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology.
Dominick J. DiJulia ’67, the longtime vice president and director of athletics at Saint Joseph’s, addressed the students at the ceremony. He received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters along with Sister Helen Cole, SSJ, MSW, LCSW, director and founder of Guadalupe Family Services in Camden, New Jersey.
“You may not realize how much you inspired us to do more and be more for you,” DiJulia told the graduates. “You are the most important individuals on this campus. You are the purpose for our work.”
DiJulia recalled the teaching of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, in challenging the students.
“Always strive for excellence,” he said. “Seek the magis and live greater. Be a person with and for others. Find the goodness and your God in all people and things.”
Judith A. Spires, C.E.O. and chair of the board for Kings Food Markets Inc., offered remarks at the afternoon ceremony. She was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.
“Today I give you three keys to success,” Spires offered. “Gratitude, support and passion. Thank someone who has had an impact on your life. Use this fabulous alumni network for support. Your drive and your passion will always work for you in any situation.”
Spires, who began her career as a part-time cashier at Acme Markets, Inc, encouraged the attendees to always chase their loftiest goals.
“When you are living your dream and using your special gift, nothing can stop you,” she said. “Nothing can stand in the way of your success.”
Mark C. Reed, Ed.D., president of Saint Joseph’s, urged the undergraduate class to remember those who supported them on their journey to commencement.
“Honor the people whose dreams of this day stretch all the way back to your first days on this planet, the network of people who provided advice, support and companionship to you on this journey,” he said.
