Casey McCarthy '21 (DPT) Finds Lifelong Passion and Connections in Physical Therapy Program

Attending USciences’ Physical Therapy program, Casey McCarthy '21 (DPT) found a challenge and a passion thanks to the inspiring faculty, their coursework, and rich fieldwork experiences.
“The DPT program is very difficult and challenged me in ways I did not think possible,” explained Dr. McCarthy. “It was always refreshing to come back after a rotation and have everyone, including the professors, seem genuinely excited to hear about our experiences. There is an overall sense of camaraderie in the DPT program that is truly unlike any other.”
Upon graduating with the Bicentennial Class, Dr. McCarthy has accepted a position at University of Texas Southwestern’s Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy Residency in Dallas, Texas, where she will be working full-time at the Clements University Hospital as an acute care physical therapist. After completing her residency, Dr. McCarthy hopes to return to the Philadelphia area to continue working in the field. She dreams of someday working in education as well, helping to shape the next generation of physical therapists.
McCarthy notes that among the many areas of physical therapy that she was exposed to during her time in the program, one in particular set her on her path. After one cardiopulmonary course with Lora Packel, PT, MSPT, PhD, chair of the department of physical therapy, McCarthy knew she had found her passion.
“After her course and my first clinical affiliation in a cardiac ICU, I know I wanted to become a cardiopulmonary specialist.” Dr. McCarthy shared. “Words really are inadequate to express the profound impact Dr. Lora Packel has had on my life. I can only hope someday to be half of the mentor and teacher she has been to me.”
For future students considering PT, Dr. McCarthy emphasizes the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone and recognizing that learning is a lifelong process. “No one expects you to know everything, and it was the times I was unsuccessful that I learned the most.”
“Looking back, one of the greatest decisions I ever made was coming to USciences. I truly do not think I would have had the same experience in any other program.” Dr. McCarthy shared. “USciences and its faculty provide all of the tools for you to achieve your highest potential, and it’s up to you to take advantage of those opportunities.”
Originally from Texas, Dr. McCarthy applied to many different areas for her post-graduate education. When she visited USciences, she knew this was a place she could call home.
“The first time I ever saw USciences was on my interview day. I always tell people my choice to attend here was nothing other than the great feeling I had after my interview.” she shares. “The conversation I had throughout my interview was just that, a conversation, and it really felt like the right choice moving forward.”
