How to Find a Summer Job
Finding a job is challenging for individuals both on and off the spectrum. COVID-19 has not only decreased the number of jobs available, but has also changed the way interviewing and hiring takes place in many organizations.
When you begin your job search first make sure your resume is up to date, and professionally put together with complete sentences, and perfect spelling. If you don’t have a resume, there are many resources online where you can download free templates to ensure your resume looks great. Once you make your resume, it’s always a good idea to have someone look it over.
Now that almost everything is online, there are numerous ways to look for jobs whether it is for the summer or for something more permanent. Some excellent resources for looking for positions include:
- Indeed
- Monster
- Ziprecruiter
- Google Search of the position you are looking for and Google will bring up companies that are hiring for that position which will then link you to a job search site
Things have certainly changed as it relates to the interview process. Most interviews, if not all, are now done virtually and even entire hiring processes are completely virtual.
Some good practices for the interview that can be utilized include:
- Being comfortable in front of the camera on the computer
- Dress for success even if you are home during the conversation.
- Research the organization you are interviewing for.
- Re-read the job description prior to your interview.
- Prepare a list of 2-3 questions that you can conclude your interview with. There are many online resources for question suggestions.
- Make sure you are on time and that you have a strong internet connection
After finishing the interview, it is always a good idea to send a “thank you” email to the person who interviewed you if you have their contact information.
