In September, 2010, Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., president of Saint Joseph's University, announced that he had been appointed the 24th president of his alma mater, Creighton University, in Omaha, Neb. Since beginning his term as Saint Joseph’s 26th president in July 2003, he has been at the helm of major University initiatives, most notably the purchase of Episcopal Academy’s 38-acre Merion campus, now named for alumnus James J. Maguire ’58 and significantly expanding opportunities to enhance academic programs and campus life.
The Board of Trustees appointed a Presidential Search Committee in October of 2010, and hired Witt/Kieffer as the Search Consultants. A thorough search process led to the selection of a candidate in January of 2011, who notified Saint Joseph’s in March 2011 that he was unable to join the Saint Joseph’s community due to health considerations. The Board of Trustees reconvened the Presidential Search Committee in May of 2011, selected Daniel J. Hilferty ’78 to chair it, and instructed the committee to conduct a Jesuit-only search.
On May 18, 2011 John Smithson ’68, Senior Vice President, was named Interim President while the next phase of the Presidential Search is conducted.
