PHILADELPHIA (August 12, 2011) – Beginning Monday, Aug. 22, through Fri., Sept. 23, the work of 10 Saint Joseph’s University faculty members from the Department of Art will be shown in the new Saint Joseph’s University Gallery located in Merion Hall, the first official exhibition held in the gallery space on the James J. Maguire ’58 Campus. An artists’ reception will be held Thurs., Sept. 8 from 6 – 8 p.m.
Work by the art department faculty has been exhibited nationally and internationally and has also been collected in major museums. Ranging from photography and painting to ceramic sculpture, each artist will present his or her work in the light-filled atrium on the second floor of Merion Hall.
“The newly formed Department of Art opens the inaugural season of the Saint Joseph’s University Gallery in Merion Hall with excitement and solidarity,” says Jeanne Bracy, associate gallery director. “This group exhibition showcases the diverse talents of our faculty and exemplifies the far-reaching curriculum of the art department. It is a privilege to present this distinguished artwork for the gallery opening.”
Previously, the Department of Fine and Performing Arts housed art history, the visual arts, art education, music, and theater and film studies. Now structured as the Department of Art and the Department of Music, Theatre and Film, the separated disciplines tailor each major more specifically to the students’ needs.
Contributors to this exhibit include Professor and Department Chair Dennis McNally, S.J., paintings; Associate Professors Dennis Weeks, M.F.A. and Susan Fenton, M.F.A., photography; Associate Professor Ron Klein, M.F.A., appropriated object sculpture; Assistant Professor Steve Cope, M.F.A., paintings and drawings; and Visiting Assistant Professor Jury Smith, M.F.A., ceramics. Also included are works by adjunct instructors Peter Bonner, M.F.A., Marta Sanchez, M.F.A., Beverly Fischer, M.F.A., and Mary Henderson, M.F.A.
Merion Hall is located off of City Avenue, on Saint Joseph’s University’s Maguire Campus at 376 N. Latches Lane in Lower Merion, Pa. A campus map may be viewed online.
