Theatre and Film Major 

The theatre and film major at Saint Joseph's University nurtures creative expression and technical proficiency while fostering intellectual curiosity and cultural awareness. Students declare a concentration in film/TV, musical theatre or theatre.

What Sets Our Program Apart

  • As a theatre and film major at Saint Joseph's University, you can choose a concentration in film/TV, theatre or musical theatre within the context of a liberal arts education. You will study production techniques, acting, directing, costume design, lighting and so much more. You will learn how ideas, technology and people come together to create the movies, television shows, live productions, music videos and various other forms of entertainment.

  • You will study the history of theatre and film and how former playwrights, actors and directors impact the future of the industry. Upon graduating with a degree in theatre and film, you will understand how to review former works through a critical lens, while applying creative energy and personal experiences to the work you create.

  • Outside of the classroom, you can participate in musical, theatrical and cinema events presented by the Department of Music, Theatre and Film throughout the academic year.

Saint Joseph's University faculty members are accomplished professionals whose primary focus is to provide you with an excellent education and develop your individual talents. In addition to classwork, internships for course credit are available for juniors and seniors who wish to engage in hands-on professional experience. Admission Information

  • To apply for this program, complete an application online. SAT and/or ACT scores are optional but you can submit them if you think they’ll strengthen your application.

  • First-Year Students
    Applications for high school students are available beginning August 1 of your senior year. Early Decision, Early Action and Regular Decision options are available. For a full timeline of deadlines, visit our admission page.

    Transfer Students
    Applications to transfer to Saint Joseph’s are accepted on a rolling basis for fall and spring start terms.

  • 1. To be considered for admission, you must have graduated from an approved secondary school (or be on track to graduate), received a diploma from an accredited home school association or earned a GED.

    2. A high school transcript with an official school stamp or an official GED transcript is required. High school transcripts must include courses completed through your junior year as well as courses in progress during your senior year. If you’ve attended any post-secondary institutions, official transcripts for those institutions are required as well.

  • Transfer credit may be awarded for previous coursework. A course must meet the following requirements to be considered for transfer to Saint Joseph’s University:

    • Undergraduate courses with a grade of “C” or above
    • Graduate courses with a grade of “B” or above
    • Pass/Fail grades are not eligible for transfer credit
    • Must be from a regionally or programmatically accredited institution
    • The coursework must match the course offered at Saint Joseph's
    • Some programs have a time limit for specific courses
    • Earned credit may be submitted for review based on a timeline of less than or equal to 5 to 10 years between completion of course and enrollment at SJU

  • If you are not a United States citizen, you must show proof of permanent resident visa status. Students educated in another country may be admitted if they:

    • Satisfy general admission requirements
    • Earn a minimum of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 79 (internet-based) on the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by the Educational Testing Service of Princeton, New Jersey

    Students from English-speaking countries may choose to take the SAT or ACT as an option to the TOEFL exam. An evaluation of foreign transcripts by the World Education Service or other approved agency is required.

  • Saint Joseph’s is a military-friendly institution and offers assistance and services to veterans and their dependents who are utilizing educational benefits. Benefits include:

    Theatre Studies Minor Minor College of Arts and Sciences

    The theatre studies minor offers students who have chosen to major in another discipline the opportunity to explore their interest in theatre. With its unique focus on acting, directing and theatre history, the minor develops skills that are valuable in any endeavor.

    The music major or minor at Saint Joseph’s University provides a comprehensive curriculum that deepens musical understanding and awareness, fosters creative expression and encourages critical analysis and inquiry. It combines coursework in music theory, composition, history and performance. Students in the music major can also choose a concentration in Music Therapy or an advisory track in Music Technology and Production.

    Entertainment can be viewed as both a product and as a promotional tool. Saint Joseph’s University's marketing department offers a one-of-a-kind major for the student who wants to work behind the scenes in show business. With a degree in entertainment marketing, you can develop a blockbuster campaign, promote a studio’s latest film or market a concert, event or theater production.
