Mission Statement for the Sustainability Working Group on Purchasing

The Purchasing Work Group will research, propose, and evaluate strategies which ensure the responsible purchase and use of resources at Saint Joseph’s University. with particular regard to the environment, the economy, and social justice issues, and the school’s mission as a Catholic and Jesuit University.


  • Serve as a clearinghouse for the SJU community in “best practices” for sustainable purchasing in higher education.
  • Investigate current purchasing practices related to sustainability throughout the University.
  • Develop new purchasing practices, policies, and recommendations in order to allow SJU to become more sustainable with little increased cost to the University and without compromising the quality of products.
  • Investigate vendor and partnership opportunities in order to increase SJU’s ability to purchase sustainable products and partner with more diverse vendors.
