Major & Minor Forms


Please note that the following information is for students who are majoring in the College of Arts and Sciences.  Procedures may vary for students who are majoring in the Haub School of Business.  These students should consult with the HSB Leahy Advising Center.  All forms may be downloaded from this site.  Paper copies are also available in the CAS Advising Support Center (Barbelin 122) and Hawk Central (Barbelin 121).

1. For CAS majors (Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Natural Sciences, Math & Computer Science), students may drop off their form in the Advising Support Center (BL 122).
2. Associate Dean of the division in which your major is offered.  
3. Associate Dean of the division in which your newly declared major is offered.
4. Associate Dean of the division in which your secondary major is offered.

1. Selection of Major

Students are encouraged to declare a major no later than the first semester of sophomore year. Before making this decision, students are encouraged to thoroughly research their options and take advantage of programs and resources available through the CAS Advising Support Center and the Career Development Center designed to help in this effort.

Steps to Declare a major:

  • Complete the form, outlining your reasons for selecting the major.
  • Meet with your first-year advisor to discuss your decision & obtain his/her recommendation.
  • Meet with the Chair of your prospective department to discuss requirements of the major and obtain his/her recommendation.  The Chair will also assign a faculty advisor in the major.
  • Obtain College approval:
    Students declaring a major in the CAS may drop off the form for approval in the CAS Advising Support Center (BL 122).  You will be notified via email when your request has been approved and forwarded onto Hawk Central for processing.

    Students declaring a major in the HSB may meet with either Father Bidinger or Brother Peltz in the William F. Leahy Advising Center (MV 289).  After obtaining this signature, the original completed form must be delivered to Hawk Central (BL 121).  Students should retain a copy for their records.

2. Change of Major

Students are required to complete this form when they wish to change their major. Before making this decision, students are encouraged to thoroughly research their options and talk with their advisor in the current major.

Steps to Change to a New Major:

  • Complete the form, outlining your reasons for changing your major.
  • Meet with the Chair of your current department to discuss your change of major and obtain his/her recommendation.
  • Meet with the Chair of your prospective department to discuss requirements of the major and obtain his/her recommendation.  The Chair will also assign a faculty advisor in the major.
  • Obtain College approval:
    Students declaring a major in the CAS may drop off the completed form at the CAS Advising Support Center (BL 122).You will be notified when your request has been approved and forwarded onto Hawk Central for processing.

    Students declaring a major in the HSB may meet with either Father Bidinger or Brother Peltz in the William F. Leahy Advising Center (MV 289).   The original completed form must be delivered to Hawk Central (BL121).  Students should retain a copy for their records.

3. Declaration of a Second Major

Students are encouraged to discuss the decision to declare a second major with their faculty advisor prior to declaring. The final transcript will record the completion of the second major. The degree granted will be the degree in the primary major.

Steps to Declare a Second Major:

  • Meet with the Chair of the secondary major department to discuss requirements of the major and obtain his/her signature. 
  • Obtain the Dean’s Office approval:
    Students declaring a major in the CAS may drop off the form for approval in the CAS Advising Support Center (BL 122).  You will be notified when your request has been approved and forwarded onto Hawk Central for processing.

    Students declaring a second major in the HSB may meet with either Father Bidinger or Brother Peltz in the William F. Leahy Advising Center (MV 289).   The original completed form must be delivered to Hawk Central (BL121).  Students should retain a copy for their records.

4. Approval for a Minor

Students may declare a minor in areas where the department has approved one.  For a minor, at least 18 credits (six courses) in the specified area must be completed. Students choosing a minor must seek the approval of the chair in the department of the minor no later than the last day of the add/drop period of their seventh semester. Students should also be aware that their choice of a minor may be restricted based on their major or primary area of study.

Steps to Declare a Minor:

  • Meet with Chair for the department offering the minor in which you are interested. Review requirements and obtain his/her approval.
  • CAS students pursuing a minor in business must meet with either Father Bidinger or Brother Peltz in the William F. Leahy Advising Center (MV 289) to review requirements for the minor and obtain approval.
  • Deliver the original completed form to Hawk Central (BL 121) and retain a copy for your records.  Dean's Office approval is not required.
