Mary-Kay GamelMary-Kay Gamel is Professor of Classics, Comparative Literature, and Theater Arts at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Since 1985 she has been involved in twenty-two productions of ancient Greek and Roman drama as translator/adaptor, director, dramaturge and/or producer, working on all the Greek and Roman playwrights—Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Plautus, Terence, Seneca, as well as Hrotsvit of Gandersheim.

In the process, she has developed new ways to bring these plays to contemporary audiences. Instead of trying to recreate ancient stagings, she looks for “emergent meanings” in the ancient scripts and uses contemporary historical analogies and modern theatrical methods, always seeking to offer her audiences the powerful intellectual and emotional experiences ancient playwrights provided to theirs.
