Program Requirements
The Reading Specialist certification can be earned outside of the M.S. program but should be coupled with Level I Elementary certification. For certification as a reading specialist (non-degree program) students must
take 27 credits. Students must take 36 credits for the Master’s Degree.
Core Requirements:
- EDU 671 Writing in the Classroom (3 credits)
- EDU 700 Psychology of Literacy (3 credits)
- EDU 701 Literacy Assessment & Instruction K-3 (3 credits)
- EDU 702 Literacy Assessment & Instruction 4-12 (3 credits)
- EDU 703 Literacy Research (3 credits)
- EDU 704 Planning and Organizing Literacy Programs (3 credits)
- EDU 705 Literacy Practicum (6 credits)
Total credits for Required Courses: 24

Elective Courses: Electives may be taken in the areas of literacy education, ESL/linguistics, supervisory, special education, or other courses approved by a graduate advisor.
